Introduction to Loose Botanical Watercolour Painting

Introduction to Loose Botanical Watercolour Painting

In this workshop, we will uncover the magical qualities of watercolour painting mother nature’s most beautiful subjects - Flowers.

We will begin by going over the supplies we need, the basic techniques and essence of watercolour, brush strokes and colour mixing. Then, take a walk through the gardens at EGC, studying and picking some of our gorgeous local flowers like Butterfly Blue Pea flower, Dianthus and Ulam Rajah that we will use as references for our art journey.

Flowers in hand, we then observe and sketch out our references, understanding the form and structure of our subject. With step by step instructions, we will paint a couple of different flowers that we had harvested fresh from the garden.

Connect to our intuition, tap into the flow of the paint and water, and create unique, beautiful floral paintings to take home. All art supplies provided.

About Crystal Tan

Originally from Singapore, with a background in marketing and yoga, I now reside in the beautiful town of Warburton, Australia, bringing my desire to find flow, joy and freedom in my art practice as I do in most things in life.

I paint to feel alive, I paint to express my inner world, and I paint because I am curious and I like to play. I also paint to find calm, peace and grounding in this crazy chaotic modern world. A creative outlet to sometimes escape into. And it's helped me in my mental health more than any other thing I've tried before. And trust me, I've tried them all!

I am passionate about teaching watercolour in a way that shows artist how to let go, embrace mistakes, take risks and accept what is with this beautiful medium and with loose florals. And though I am not what you may think of as a traditional art therapist, the way I treat my art practice and they way I teach, feels like therapy. Watercolour is soothing, calming, and the way  it works is magical, intuitive, and healing in its own beautiful organic way. I teach workshops in person  in my home studio in Warburton and online on Patreon. I also have a Youtube Channel where I share my art life, a bit of tutorials, techniques but mostly my philosophies on art and life.

I am inspired mostly by nature. Flowers in particular. As flowers are the like the accents of the natural world. The show stoppers. The "look at me" wow factor. They are also delicate, fragile, fleeting. The beauty, depth, layers and variety of flowers is something nothing else can beat if you ask me. So they are my subject mainly for exploration, for joy, for freedom, for expressing what I feel inside.

When I'm not painting, I am busy being a mum to my 2 very active lively boys who are 10 and 12. A wife and a dog mum to our 5 year old Cavoodle. We live in our adopted home in Warburton, Victoria Australia working from my home studio in the beautiful hills of this picturesque town. I am also a part time yoga teacher, teaching 2 times a week at a local studio.
