About Vanilla

Part of the orchid family, vanilla is one of the most labour intensive of all agricultural products, as the entire process from cultivation to harvesting is done by hand. As a result, vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world, and one kilo of vanilla can cost as much as a kilo of silver.

Equally rich is the experience of growing the plant at home, which can be extremely rewarding. A plant fit for moderate to expert growers in Singapore, it takes 4 years before the first flower blooms, a spectacle that lasts a mere 12 hours, and that occurs only annually from then on.

This workshop is designed for participants aged 18 & above. All attendees require a ticket. Please note that the tour will be conducted in English.

About this Collaboration

Growing our own food is not only great for us physically, mentally and emotionally, it can also be incredibly rewarding - especially when we successfully nurture a plant from seed to fruit. Oftentimes gardeners focus on growing kitchen staples like herbs and leafy greens. But there are so many more varieties of edibles that home gardeners in Singapore are able to grow.

EGC is excited to collaborate with vanilla growers Mireia on our first-ever vanilla growing workshop, which aims to equip participants with the practical skills to grow vanilla in their own homes.

We hope that this will be the first of many partnerships between EGC and local start-up farmers, to further empower and enrich the gardening community in Singapore.

About Mireia

Mireia is a Singaporean brand growing and supplying organic artisan products specializing in vanilla. Inspired by the children of founders Charles and Juwita, Mireia was officially established as a company in 2019. They are Singapore’s first vanilla bean plant cultivator and vanilla processor. Mireia’s first project involved growing 45 vanilla vines at the Hanging Gardens-Mexican Roots exhibition at Garden by the Bay’s 10th Anniversary. They are continuously expanding our vanilla plantations in Singapore and now have close to 400 plants, working together with schools and local institutions, such as Shatec, Kinderland, and more to come. Mireia’s goal is to make Singapore one of the leading vanilla bean suppliers locally and globally.

About the Trainer

Charles Santoso is the founder and CEO of Mireia Pte Ltd, Singapore’s first and only Vanilla Bean Cultivator and Processor in Singapore. Before starting his business in vanilla, Santoso also knew next to nothing about Vanilla cultivation. In his past life, he was a well-qualified real estate professional in Asset and Investment Management.

He started planting Vanilla 10 years ago in their backyard and learned about vanilla cultivation and curing from farmers in Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. Currently, he is managing Mireia Pte Ltd with more than 300 plants cultivated in Singapore and aiming to establish Singapore's preeminent position as one of the world's leading Vanilla producing countries, growing healthy organic Vanilla for sale as a fresh product.
